How Far Is the Moon, and What’s It Like There?
We only see 59% of our moon because it is locked in a tidal orbit with Earth. The moon experiences seismic activities called moonquakes. They are caused by the gravitation between the Earth and Sun. According to Apollo astronauts who walked on the moon, the moon smells like gunpowder or burnt charcoal. The moon orbits Earth in an ellipse every 27.322 days. The marked locations in the video (when dark) are the landing points of the Apollo missions. The reason the moon appears larger or smaller in the sky is due to the elliptical orbit. The temperature on the moon ranges form 127c by day and -173c at night. Gravity on the moon is 1/6th of Earth’s gravity. The moon has an exosphere made up of helium, neon, and other trace gases. The moon is one fourth the size of Earth and orbits us from ~253,000 miles away. Ancient sailors used the moon to navigate and measure time spent at sea.
